Now, in this well-received yet admittedly flawed game, players have 4 different character types to choose from, the Ogryn Skullbreaker, Psyker Psykinetic, Veteran Sharpshooter, and the Zealot Preacher. Each of these classes has its own unique playstyle and mechanics. So, with that in mind, let’s go over some experiences with each class in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide that players will feel the biggest hit of dopamine going through.

8 Ogryn Skullbreaker: The Big Box Of Hurt Impact

Each character in Darktide has a variety of passives, feats, and special abilities. But, on top of all that and their primary and secondary weapon selections, they also all have their own types of grenades. The Zealot has their Stumm Grenades, the Veteran has Frag Grenades, the Psyker has Brain Burst, and Ogryn has his Big Box of Hurt. But, what exactly is a “Big Box of Hurt”? Well, it’s a literal box of grenades that Ogryn chucks at his target with full force.

When Ogryn chucks this thing and it makes an impact with the enemy, the heavy “thud” that this heavy box of explosives makes is so absurdly satisfying to hear.

7 Psyker Psykinetic: Being A Kill-On-Command Unit

The Psyker Psykinetic is Darktide’s version of a mage, as this Warp-sensitive individual can channel the extra-dimensional Warp energy into all sorts of miraculous spells, with their primary option being Brain Burst. Brain Burst is a high-damage single-target ability that is meant for taking out all the specialist and elite enemies as they pop up. And, nothing feels better as a Psyker than being just a step ahead of their allies and popping an Elite Unit right as one of their teammates pings it.

Basically, it feels great to be the one the squad turns to when it comes to the big enemies, especially since the Psyker doesn’t have to worry about the same mechanics other characters do like low ammo or gathering more grenades. That said, as the difficulty levels rise, good Psyker players will have less and less freedom to use Brain Burst freely.

6 Zealot Preacher: Stumm Grenades Are Just Incredible

Zealot, at least in the current state of Darktide, is in a weird spot. On paper, Zealot seems like a class with a unique gameplay loop and fun overall design. But, a lot of Zealot’s current mechanics either don’t work right or are interrupted by basic enemy behavior. For example, their main ability Chastise the Wicked, can be interrupted by basic gunfire, which is likely the exact thing the Zealot was using this ability to try and get away from or stop.

In contrast to all this, however, the Zealot’s Stumm Grenades work as intended and also work wonders. When thrown, it produces a debilitating gas that stuns all enemies in its effect radius, including Elites. So, this makes using the Stumm Grenade at a perfect time, such as when three Ogres barge into the squad, feel absolutely fantastic.

5 Veteran Sharpshooter: Ruining Your Psyker’s Day

This is probably the first example of satisfaction from griefing other players on here, but most of the time it isn’t done intentionally. To put it simply, both the Veteran Sharpshooter and the Psyker Psykinetic are fantastic Rejects for taking out Elite enemies. But, the Psyker’s primary function in a squad is to be the one that clears out these Elites, while the Sharpshooter is more multi-faceted and based around general ranged cover-fire and enemy gunner suppression.

All that said, there will often be times when both a Psyker and Sharpshooter are in the same game and every time the Psyker is just about to finish casting their Brain Burst, the Sharpshooter will, intentionally or not, snipe the Elite or Special Enemy they’re currently channeling Brain Burst on. And something about having the Psyker make jokes about kill stealing, mutter to themselves about how they can’t ever seem to finish casting, or complain about how the Sharpshooter is ‘overtuned’ is just so hilarious (and this is coming from a Psyker main).

4 Ogryn Skullbreaker: Being The Most Relied-On Reject

To reiterate, each Reject in Darktide has its own ‘role’ to fill in a squad for the most part, with some variation depending on weapons, feats, and overall builds. But, in general, the Ogryn is the front-line wall that deals mediocre damage in exchange for being able to tank enemies like no one else, knock over both hordes and even groups of Ogryn enemies (a truly painful Penance), and they even have good damage potential as well. .

All that said, this isn’t actually the part of Ogryn that people depend on most, especially in higher difficulties like Heresy or Damnation. Rather, Ogryn is more well-known for his ability to assist allies hanging from ledges or revive them when wounded. Because of his passive, Loyal Protector, Ogryns aren’t interrupted when they’re assisting or reviving (or at least aren’t supposed to be). And, this leads to everyone in a squad, especially newer players, subconsciously relying on their Ogryn and rooting for them, which is a pretty satisfying feeling.

3 Psyker Psykinetic: Being A Mage-Tank With Kinetic Deflection

Again, Psyker is the mage of Darktide, trading high health and high survivability for high single-target damage and lots of versatility through Force Staves. But, Psyker is unique in that it actually has a bit of an intended workaround for this standard trope that lets Psyker tank damage just as much as anyone. To do this, players will first need to reach level 20 with their Psyker.

After reaching 20, pick Kinetic Deflection for the 4th-tier Feat, and it’s done. Kinetic Deflection uses Peril instead of Stamina when the Psyker is blocking at anything less than 98% Peril. This of course means its easier for Psykers to self-destruct, but even the less cautious ones should be able to avoid this.

2 Zealot Preacher: All Those Hilariously Over-The-Top Voice Lines

This is the only entry on here that isn’t related to gameplay, and it’s the fact that the Zealot is such a hilarious character to have around. They’re the perfect encapsulation of the Imperium of Man in 40K lore. Why? Because they’re xenophobic, religiously devoted to an extreme fault, and ready to slaughter thousands in the name of the Emperor.

And, even if it may not be ’literally true’, the Zealot characters always feel like they’re talking the most in-game. They’re constantly spouting lines about how righteousness will be their reward from this incoming skirmish, praying to the Emperor to watch their righteous fury, and so much more. Because of this, allies will constantly be chuckling or commenting to Zealot players about how funny those lines are. So, by playing Zealot, people are literally improving the gameplay experience of others by default.

1 Veteran Sharpshooter: Using Camo Expert & Watching Hordes Run By You

It wasn’t intentional, but both of the Sharpshooter entries are sort of based around showing off to the rest of the squad or unintentionally messing with them. To put it simply, the Sharpshooter gains access to a Feat called Camo Expert at level 20. All this Feat does is that, while standing still, enemies are much less likely to target the Sharpshooter or really even notice them at all.

And, because of this, there will be a lot of times when a horde of Poxwalkers or a couple of Ragers will just jog right past a Sharpshooter ally and start swinging at their allies behind them, which makes it ‘feel’ like the Sharpshooter sent them their way. Of course, they didn’t, and more often than not they’ll shoot those same mobs as they’re passing by, but it’s still satisfying for Sharpshooters to see enemies just ignoring them entirely.
