Like the games that came before it, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will offer gamers a four-player co-op FPS experience. The released trailer showcased a team of four Inquisition Acolytes investigating a hive city named Tertium, which should have been densely populated. Instead, the deserted location they explore provides a sense of eerie discomfort before the squad finds themselves face to face with a Chaos cult.

The game promises players the ability to fight alongside their friends against “hordes of enemies” as they attempt to survive Tertium and, presumably, uncover the truth as to what happened there. Taking inspiration from Warhammer 40k’s extensive lore – which all began as a popular tabletop game and now extends to video games, comic books, movies and a plethora of novels –  gamers can explore the depths of the hive as the “seeds of corruption threaten an overwhelming tide of darkness.”  Players team up to fight back against a heretical cult known as the Admonition, whose collective intention is to take control of the planet Atoma Prime and destroy its people. Fatshark previously revealed the game will be released on Xbox Series X as a “console launch exclusive.”

Not much is known about the game’s story or gameplay mechanics outside of the release trailer at this point in time, though its moody, oppressive setting and teamwork dynamics are bound to appeal to FPS and Warhammer 40k fans alike and those who enjoyed Vermintide.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is scheduled to release in 2021 on PC and Xbox Series X.
