Dawn of War III will reunite the Space Marines, Orks, and Eldar once again to do battle like only Warhammer 40,000 can deliver. Here’s Relic’s introduction to the story and setting at the start of Dawn of War III:

To capture the scale and intensity of a Warhammer 40,000 interstellar war, Relic is pulling the favorite features from both Dawn of War and its sequel. Giant units are back, Relic having already revealed the Imperial Knight, Gorkanaut, and Wraithknight units. Giant units fit especially well in giant armies, with Relic promising to deliver epic-sized fights akin to the original Dawn of War. However, they’ll also be including the elite squads and units with special abilities that Dawn of War II delivered.

Best yet, there’s an announcement trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III that lives up to the expectations that fans will have from previous cinematic trailers for the franchise. Expect plenty of Space Marine, Ork, and Eldar action – and a body count to match the scale of it all.

Judging from the trailer, they’re certainly scaling up the grimdark, aren’t they? Rewatching the trailer and realizing that the huge mountain, as well as the rain pouring from the sky, consists entirely of the corpses of soldiers from the three factions. The entire thing is a rather abstract take on how war is the blood of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with the soldiers entirely willing to smile while they die for the player’s enjoyment.

Love it or hate it, Relic’s absolutely shown today that they’re back in the Warhammer 40,000 business and that business is good. And also that Warhammer 40,000 is terrifying.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III is planned for release in 2017 for PC.
