All that being said, there are operatives that are constantly at the top of the damage charts. Some classes feel impossible to kill. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide might say they’ve given equal love to all of their operatives, but a couple of them just don’t have it in them to be as strong as the others.

4 Zealot: Preacher

The preacher is a great idea that fails in practice. It’s clear that this operative should be using exclusively melee attacks when that’s possible with so many perks in that regard, yet the two-handed chainsword is a massive letdown. Revving it takes an extra action and the charge does not last nearly long enough. The Flamers are cool, but using them forfeits the other advantages of using a Preacher.

It takes getting to a very high equipment level to get the toughness needed to survive on higher difficulties. And, at this point, other classes are blowing enemies away, not merely surviving.

The grenade is the final nail in the coffin. The Sharpshooter essentially gets the same grenade except it kills its foes while the Preacher still needs to kill the enemies hit. Plus, it doesn’t work on the mini-bosses. Unless players really love all the voice lines in the game about loving the Emperor, maybe let a teammate handle this role.

3 Psyker: Psykinetic

It should be understood that the Psyker, as the lone caster class, is going to have some fans. And it should. But managing peril is not at all fun and forces the Psyker to use attacks they aren’t gifted in while waiting for peril to go down. This is almost a total copy of the incredibly unpopular overcharge system used in other Warhammer games.

It can be tough to stack Warp Siphons as they fall off every 25 seconds. Brain Burst is lethal, but it needs to be charged to do lethal damage against most enemies. While charging, players aren’t dealing other forms of damage. Against single targets, this can be a fair trade, but it’s not smart to do while getting swarmed by enemies. Sadly, that’s the most common occurrence of combat. Some of the new and unique enemies suffer against the Psyker, but there are too many opponents that counter its core gameplay loop.

2 Ogryn: Skullbreaker

Where the Preacher fails, the Skullbreaker succeeds at being the best combatant on the frontlines. Thick Skin makes the Ogryn an incredible tank while his extra stagger and heavy melee attacks are perfect against elite units.

Keeping elite units off-balance cannot be understated. Many groups without a Skullbreaker will simply be trading blows with elite units, taking big hits to their health at inconvenient times. The Skullbreaker’s stagger can bring their odds of dealing damage down substantially.

The Big Box of Hurt may be the best move against single targets in the game. Any operative can hack and stash at melee hordes, but not all of them can handle the most dangerous bosses. Slab Shields function as both offensive and defensive weapons. Finally, quality Grenadier Gauntlets, even in tough difficulties, can one-shot specialist units and stagger or wipe out large groups. The class doesn’t have automatic weapons and doesn’t need them or miss them.

1 Veteran: Sharpshooter

The Sharpshooter is straightforward and probably a little too straightforward to be considered balanced. Ranged weapon damage is the best kind of damage source against bosses. And, for those who are playing at the toughest difficulties, bosses are really where fights are won or lost.

Against elites and specialists, the Sharpshooter can mark all of them nearby. These kinds of enemies can incapacitate a player in one hit and all of them need the element of surprise to get their shot in. With Volley Fire, they’re marked and the player has an absurd amount of damage ready to go.

Losing ammunition is the one danger for the class, but it has two traits that, when invested in, make this issue a triviality. There are enough ammo caches in the game to remain topped off after leveling up the Sharpshooter. Unless the PC requirements for the game are too high to handle intense combat, there is no reason not to play the Sharpshooter.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is available now for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
